Trees, shrubs or woody vines. Leaves simple, alternate, estipulate. Flowers bisexual or unisexual, in cymes or panicles, sepals 5; petals 5, usually imbricate; stamens 10 to many, distinct or adnate to the base of the petals, hypogynous; anthers 2-celled, versatile, dehiscing by apical pores or longitudinally; ovary 3-5 or more-celled, placentation axile, ovules with a single integument, numerous in each locule, anatropous; styles usually as many as the ovary cells, distinct or connate, generally persistent. Fruit a berry or leathery capsule. Seeds non-arillate, usually with large embryos and abundant endosperm.
