Hygrophilous herbs sometimes with axillary spines. Leaves lanceolate or obovate. Flowers sessile, fasciculate in axils, rarely solitary or in spike; bracts elliptic or lanceolate; bracteoles small or none; calyx tubular, 5-fid; corolla tube ventricose at apex, limb bilabiate, upper lip erect, 2-toothed or shallowly 2-lobed, lower lip strongly 3-lobed, usually plicate-rugose; stamens 4, didynamous, posterior ones similar to others or smaller or rudimentary; anthers incised of base, 2-celled; disc obscure; ovary oblong; ovules 4-many; style entire or bidentate. Capsule oblong-linear, terete; retinacula hardened, curved, acute; seeds numerous, with long mucilaginous hairs.
About 100 species, widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions of the Old and New World; four species in Taiwan.
