Evergreen trees; bark gray; branches gray, with lenticels; branchlets reddish-brown, with lenticels; winter buds ellipsoid, scales deep brown, glabrous, margins short-hairy.
Leaves oblong or oblong-ovate, 7–9 cm long, 2–2.5 cm wide, acuminate or acute at apex, acute or cuneate at base, serrate toward apex at margins, lateral veins 7–9 pairs; petioles 1.4–1.8 cm long.
Staminate flowers unknown. Pistillate flowers with 6-lobed perianth, styles 3–4, stigmas enlarged and flattened.
Cupules 0.7–0.9 cm long, 1.2–1.5 cm across, sessile, scales in 9–10 concentric rings;nuts globose 1.4–1.6 cm long, 1.2–1.4 cm across.
This variety is very similar to the typical phase, but is distinguishable from it by the globose fruit and the narrower Leaves becoming yellowish when dry.
