    About 15 species, from tropical and southern Africa to New Caledonia and southern Japan; two species in Taiwan.

    Herbs, perennial; stems 20-50 cm tall, much branched, glabrous below, upper portions more or less pubescent. Leaves membranaceous, lanceolate, ovate or ovate-oblong, 3-6 cm long, 1-3 cm wide, apex acuminate or acute, base obtuse or acute, entire or obscurely crenate, both surfaces thinly pilose; petiole 5-15 mm long, slightly pubescent. Cymes clustered, terminal and axillary; peduncle to 1 cm long; bracts lanceolate elliptic or ovate, 1-2 cm long acute to obtuse or rounded at both ends, margins nearly glabrous or ciliate; bracteoles triangular-lanceolate, 2-3 mm long; calyx 2.5-3 mm long, 5-partite, segments narrow, acuminate; corolla pale, 2-2.5 cm long, pubescent without, limb bilabiate, upper lip elliptic, entire, lower one narrowly oblong, minutely 3-lobed; stamens exserted, ca. 4 mm long beyond mouth of corolla tube; style 2-2.5 cm long. Capsule clavate, loosely pilose; seeds ellipsoid, ca. 2.5 mm long, minutely tuberculate.
    Japan and central China. Taiwan, in the north.

    Herbs to 50 cm tall; stems subquadrangular, nearly glabrous. Leaves membranaceous, lanceolate, oblong or oblong-ovate, apex acuminate to subacute, base acute or obtuse, slightly oblique, margins entire or shallowly undulate, glabrous on both surfaces but slightly pubescent along veins on lower surface, lateral veins 4-6 per side; petiole to 3 cm long. Cymes terminal, 1-4-nate, compressed 1-4 involucres; bracts of each pair unequal, ovate or ovate-oblong, larger one 2.5-3.4 cm long, smaller one 2-3 cm long, obtuse at tip, rounded or cordate at base, both glabrous; bracteoles minute; calyx ca. 3 mm long, with glandular and nonglandular hairs; corolla reddish violet, to 5 cm long, puberulent without, limb bilabiate, upper lip broadly obovate, lower lip oblong, minutely 3-lobed; stamens long-exserted, ca. 1 cm beyond mouth of corolla tube; filaments retrorsely hirsute; ovary glabrous. Capsule 1.5-2 cm long, pubescent; seeds orbicular, slightly tuberculate.

    Eastern India, southern and central China, the Philippines, Malaysia and Java. Taiwan, in the south and center.
