    Trees or shrubs, often climbing, sometimes spiny, without milky latex. Leaves mostly opposite or distichous, sometimes spirally arranged or verticillate, simple, exstipulate. Flowers in racemes or spikes, sometimes capitate, bracteolate at base, bisexual, rarely polygamo-monoecious; calyx-tube whether or not strongly produced beyond ovary; limb 4-5-fid, persistent or not; petals 4-5 or absent, often small, imbricate or valvate in bud; stamens 4-10, seated on calyx-limb or on the bottom of the calyx, 1-seriate if there are as many stamens as calyx-lobes, 2-seriate if there are more stamens; filaments subulate or filiform, incurved in bud; anthers dorsifixed, small, 2-celled, dehiscing longitudinally; ovary inferior, 1-celled; ovules 1-6, hanging from apex of the ovary-cell; style 1; stigma small, entire; disk present or not. Fruit dry, often angular or winged; pyrene 1-celled, 1-seeded. Seed without endosperm.
    A pantropical family of about 18 genera, two genera native to Taiwan.

    1. LUMNITZERA Willd. 欖李屬

    Shrubs or small trees of mangrove, banks of tidal creeks, borders of coastal fishponds. Leaves spirally arranged, densely crowded at apices of stems, spatulate, base acutely passing into short petiole, apex broadly rounded-emarginate, fleshy-coriaceous, often bearing acarodomatia along the margins, the latter therefore seemingly crenate in dried specimens. Flowers racemose, 5-merous; receptacle compressed, narrowed towards the base, shortly produced beyond the ovary; calyx-teeth short, obtuse, persistent; bracteoles 2, inserted on the broad sides of the receptacle far above the base, persistent; petals oval-oblong, caducous; stamens 5-10; filaments filiform-subulate; ovules 2-5; style persistent; drupe oblong, 1-seeded.
    Species 2, paleotropical and in Polynesia; one in Taiwan.

    Large shrub or small tree, without pneumatophores. Leaves 1.5-6.5 cm by 0.6-2.2 cm long. Racemes axillary; calyx-teeth flat, finely ciliate; petals white, 2-5 mm by 1.5-2 mm long; stamens 10; filaments white, not or hardly longer than corolla; style 5-6 mm long; receptacle 5-7 mm long, slightly compressed, about twice as long as broad; pedicels 1-2 mm. Fruit 11-16 mm long.
    Tropical Africa, Asia to Pacific Islands and Australia. Taiwan, in mangrove along seashore of Kaohsiung and Tainan.
