     92. ELATINACEAE 溝繁縷科
    HUANG, TSENG-CHIENG

    Aquatic, marsh or semi-terrestnal herbs. Leaves simple, opposite or whorled, stipulate. Flowers small, bisexual, axillary, solitary or fascicled, pedicelled; sepals 3-5, free, imbricate or connate at base; petals 3-5, free, imbricate; stamens 5 to 10, free, hypogynous; ovary superior, free, ovoid, 2-5-locular; styles 3-5, free, short or sessile; ovules numerous; placentation axile. Fruit a 3-5-celled, septicidal capsule.
    Two genera and 40 species in the warmer parts of the world; two genera in Taiwan.

    1. BERGIA L. 伯格草屬

    Herbs with opposite, serrate leaves. Flowers solitary, fascicled or clustered; sepals 5, acute, with a wide median vein and membranaceous margins, free; petals 5; stamens 5-10; ovary globose or ellipsoid, mostly 5-celled, gradually passing into the short styles; stigma globose. Capsules globose, septicidal; seeds smooth or ribbed.
    About 27 species in the tropical regions; one in Taiwan.

    An erect or ascending herb, up to 30 cm high, often decumbent at base; stems and branches reddish. Leaves lanceolate-obovate or elliptic, acute at apex, attenuate at base, serrate, 0.6-2.5 cm long, 4-10 mm wide. Flowers axillary, solitary or fascicled; sepals green, lanceolate or ovate, the apex acuminate, about 2 mm long; petals as long as the sepals; stamens 10. Capsules ovoid, about 2 mm long.
    Tropical Asia and Australia; Taiwan growing on paddy field.

    Herbs of wet places. Leaves opposite or verticillate, entire. Flowers solitary, ebracteate; sepals 3, membranaceous, obtuse at apex, connate at base; petals 3-5, membranaceous obovate, obtuse at apex; stamens 3; ovary globose, 3-celled, the styles very short, 3 fids. Capsules globose; seeds straight or curved, impressed at the top, with a very thin pellucid wall, scalariform, ribbed.
    Species about 12, in the temperate and subtropical regions; one in Taiwan.
