     91. STACHYURACEAE 旌節花科

    Shrubs or small trees, deciduous or evergreen, often with straggling branches, the branchlets with large pith, the winter buds small, with 2-4 outer scales. Leaves alternate, the petioles slender, the blades membranaceous to coriaceous, serrulate; stipules small, caducous. Flowers small, regular, perfect or functionally dioecious, sessile to short-pedicellate, in erect or pendulous racemes or in spikes axillary on last years branches, with one bract at the base of the pedicel and two bracteoles, subtending the flower. Sepals and petals each 4, free, imbricate. Stamens 8, distinct, the anthers versatile. Ovary superior, incompletely 4-celled by the intrusion of the parietal placentae, the style simple, short, the stigma capitate, 4-lobed, the ovules many. Fruit berry-like, with leathery pericarp. Seeds many, small, with soft aril; endosperm present; embryo straight, the cotyledons elliptic, the radicle short.
    One genus in eastern Asia.

    Characters of the family.
    About 12 species, temperate regions of eastern Asia, extending from the eastern Himalayas in the west to the Bonin Islands in the east; one species in Taiwan.

    A small tree with spreading branches. Leaves chartaceous to coriaceous, glabrous, greenish above, pale beneath, oblong to oblong-lanceolate, 8-13 cm long, 3.5-5.5 cm broad, caudate-acuminate at apex, rounded to subcordate at base, finely serrulate, the lateral veins 5-7 on each side, raised and prominent on both surfaces. Inflorescence 5-10 cm long, sessile. Flowers yellow, the bracts and bracteoles about 2 mm long; petals obovate, 5 mm long, 3.5 mm broad; ovary and style about 5 mm long, scarcely exserted. Fruit subglobose, 7-8 mm across.
    Widely distributed from the eastern Himalayas and northern Burma through southern China. Taiwan, in broad-leaved forests at medium and high altitudes (500-3,500 m) throughout the island.
