    Trees or shrubs; juice often milky and acrid. Leaves alternate, very rarely opposite, estipulate, simple or compound. Inflorescence various; flowers small, regular, unisexual, polygamous, or bisexual. Calyx 3-5-partite, sometimes accrescent. Petals 3-5, alternate with the sepals, free, imbricate or valvate. Disc flat, cup-shaped or annular, entire or lobed, rarely obsolete. Stamens as many as the petals, rarely more, inserted under, rarely on the disc, the filaments usually subulate; anthers 2-celled, basifixed or dorsifixed. Ovary superior, very rarely half-inferior, 1- or 2-6-celled, of 5-6 free carpels in Buchanania; ovules solitary in the cells, pendulous from the top or wall or from an ascending basal funicle. Fruit usually a 1-5-celled, 1-5-seeded drupe. Seeds exalbuminous; embryo straight or curved; cotyledons plano-convex.
    Genera about 60, chiefly tropical.

    1. BUCHANANIA Roxb. 山羨子屬

    Trees. Leaves simple, alternate, petioled. Panicles terminal and axillary. Flowers small, white, hermaphroditic; calyx short, 3-5-toothed or lobed, persistent, imbricate; petals 4-5, oblong, recurved, imbricate; disc orbicular, 5-lobed; stamens 8-10, free; carpels 5-6, free, seated in the cavity of the disc, one fertile, the rest imperfect; style short, the stigma truncate; ovule 1, pendulous from a basal funicle. Drupe small, fleshy, the stone crustaceous or bony, 2-valved; seed gibbous, acute at one end.
    Species about 30, tropical Asia, Australia and the Pacific Islands, one in Taiwan.

    A small tree, evergreen; branchlets glabrous. Leaves alternate, oblong or obovate-elliptic, 15-20 cm long, 4.5-5.5 cm broad, the apex obtuse or subrounded, the base cuneate, the veins prominent on both surfaces, the margins entire; petioles 2.5-3 cm long. Inflorescence axillary, paniculate; flowers white, 3-4 mm across, 4-5-merous. Drupe depressed-globose, 8 mm across.
    Indo-Malaya to the Philippine Islands. Taiwan, along the seashore at southern parts.

    Trees or shrubs. Leaves alternate, estipulate, pinnate or 3-foliolate. Flowers small, apetalous, in axillary racemes or panicles, dioecious. Staminate flowers: calyx 3-5-fid; stamens 3-4; disc small; rudimentary ovary 0 or minute. Pistillate flowers: sepals 3-4; stamens and disc 0; ovary sessile, 1-celled;
