     Fagara leiorhachia Hayata, Icon. Pl. Form. 6: 10. 1916.
    Scandent; branchlets and leaf rachis with retrorse prickles. Leaves imparipinnate, 8-37 cm long; leaflets 2-13 pairs, subopposite to alternate, subcoriaceous, ovate to elliptic-lanceolate, 3-9 cm long, 1-4 cm broad, cuneate to obtuse at base, the lateral veins 4-14 on each side of the midrib. Flowers axillary or axillary and terminal, paniculate; axis and branches glabrous to short-pubescent. Male flowers 3-6 mm long; pedicels obsolete, to 5 mm long; sepals 4, triangular to rounded, about 1 mm long; petals 4, white to pale yellow, elliptic-ovate, about 3 mm long; stamens 5-6 mm long. Female flowers about 3 mm long; pedicels, sepals, petals and disc as in staminate flowers; rudimentary stamens obsolete, to 1 mm long; gynoecium 4-carpelate; 1-1.5 mm high; styles divergent at anthesis, the stigmas globose. Fruiting pedicels 1-6 mm long; follicles subglobose, 4-5 mm in diameter.
    India, China, the Ryukyus, Sumatra, Java and Borneo. Taiwan, at low altitudes throughout the island.

    Fagara laxifoliolata, F. cyrtorhachia and F. leiorhachia have been listed as synonyms of Fagara cuspidata (Zanthoxylum scandens) by Li, Woody Flora of Taiwan 373. 1963.

    A shrub, dioecious. Branchlets with hooked prickles. Leaves to about 12 cm long, imparipinnate, the rachis glabrous, flat, slightly winged; leaflets chartaceous, of 5-8 pairs, sessile, opposite, ovate-oblong, glabrous or occasionally with a few hairs beneath, about 20-25 mm long, 7-8 mm broad, acute to acuminate at base, the margins coarsely serrate, distinctly pellucid-punctate, pale beneath; petioles and rachis 15 cm long. Flowers in short terminal cymose panicles. Female flowers: pedicels glabrous, 1 mm long; sepals triangular, small, 0.6 mm long, glabrous; petals oblong, 2.5 mm long, 1.2 mm broad, acutish at apex, glabrous; gynoecium 3-4 carpellate; stigmas globose. Fruit of 1-3 capels, each about 3 mm across; seeds black, shining.
    China, Japan and Korea. Taiwan, in forests at medium altitudes throughout the island.
