    14. HYMENOPHYLLACEAE
    CHARLES E. DEVOL
Mostly small epiphytic, petrophilous or terrestrial plants; rhizomes sometimes short and erect, but usually stender and long-creeping, covered with hairs when young, simple or variously divided. Sori marginal or extramarginal; sporangia borne on an elongate or capitate receptacle (an extended veinlet), sessile, the annulus complete, oblique, the dehiscence vertical; indusia tubular or 2-lipped; spores trilete. Gametophytes filamentous (algal-like) in Trichomanes (sensu lata); ribbon like in Hymenophyllum (sensu lata) .
@@Generally considered to consist of two genera, divided by Copeland into 33 genera, 15 of which occur in Taiwan.
    KEY TO THE GENERA
    1. Fronds tufted or approximate; roots fibrous; indusia tubular, receptacles exserted
    2. Small epiphytes; fronds lanceolate, bipinnatifid; laminar cells transversely elongate

    2. Indusia tubular or conical, if mouth is 2-lipped, not cleft to base
    3. Fronds with specialized marginal cells or with false veins (either occuring in a sub- marginal line, as false veins between true ones, or as scattered short striae)
    4. Marginal cells differing from laminar cells
