    FILICOPSIDA u
    Vascular plants ranging from minute epiphytes, small aquatics, common woodland ferns to tropical tree ferns; the stems have a wide range of stele types; the leaves (megaphylls) differ in size, shape, texture, venation and dermal appendages; the sporangia differ in form and location, usually being borne on the margin or back of ordinary fronds, but are sometimes borne on separate fertile fronds; indusia may be present or absent, and if present, of many different shapes; spores occur in a tremendous number of forms, nearly all are homosporous, but a few aquatics are heterosporous.

    A family of small floating ferns; stems horizontal, vegetative reproduction rapid due to fragmentation; roots absent. Leaves of two types: floating green leaves in pairs, the midrib distinct, the upper surface covered with papillae, the under- surface covered with straight multicellular hairs; submersed leaves finely dissected, root-like. Sporocarps borne in a cluster on a branch of the root-like leaf, globular or ovoid, covered with multicellular hairs, external appearances alike, some contain- ing megasporangia, others microsporangia; being borne on the much-branched receptacles.
    A family of only one living genus.

    About 10 species, o.ne in Taiwan.

    @@@Leaves oval-oblong, 10-15 mm long; papillate on upper surface, with 4 free hairs on tips of each papilla. Sporocarps globose, covered with brown, multicellular hairs.
    Distributed in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America. Floating on ponds, ditches, paddy fields.

    Known from nearly every county, but very few collections made.
