    1. CYCADACEAE ĬK
    HUI-LIN LI
    Palm-like trees or shrubs; trunk colunnar, sometimes branched. Leaves alternate, pinnate, circinate in bud. Staminate and ovuliferous cones borne in terminal clusters in the center of leaf-rosette, dioecious, consisting of numerous spirally arranged staminate scales, the scales bearing numerous, globose anther cells on the under surface. Ovuliferous cones of crowded whorls of ovuliferous scales, the scales either leaf-like, pinnatifid and bearing marginal ovules, or peltate with 2 or more suspended ovules. Seeds large, drupe-like; embryo with two cotyledons.
    Tropical and subtropical, genera nine, species about 90; only one genus in Taiwan.
    1. CYCAS L. ĬK
    Palm-like trees or shrubs. Leaves pinnate, the leaflets coriaceous, linear, usually very stiff, with a prominent midrib, the lower ones often reduced to spines. Staminate scales closely imbricated, cuneate, usually prolonged in a long acuminate point. Ovuliferous scales loosely imbricate, leaf-like, pinnatifid, with 1 to 5 pairs of ovules on the margin of stalk. Seeds large, ovoid or ellipsoid; compressed.
    Species over 15, mostly tropical Asia, Australia and Polynesia; one species in Taiwan.

    Cycas revoluta Thunb. var. taiwaniana (Carr.) Schuster in Engler, Pflanzenr, 99 (IV. 1): 84.1932.
    An evergreen, palm-like tree, 1-3.5 m high, clothed with the woody bases of the petioles. Leaves in terminal crowns, linear-oblong, pinnate, 1-1.8 m long, the leaflets linear, 2.5-6.2 cm long, 4-8 mm broad. Staminate cones peduncled, subcylindric, about 50 cm long and 9-10 cm across. Ovuliferous cones sessile, broadly ovoid, about 25 cm long and 20 cm across; ovules 2-4 to the scale. Seeds ellipsoid, compressed, 4-4.5 cm long, 2/3 cm across.
    Southern China (Kwangtung, Fukien). In Taiwan, limited to the eastern part of mountain valleys, very rare.
