Rhizome dictyostelic, usually creeping; scales peltate, often clathrate, Fronds often simple (not lobed), pinnatifid, pinnate or rarely digitately lobed; stipes usually articulate to rhizome; veins anastomosing with included veinlets (venation pattern varies with the genera, often hidden). Sori usually round, oval or linear, and in some genera acrostichoid; exindusiate; peltate, clathrate paraphyses often present.
A large family of mostly tropical ferns, with about 50 genera and over 1,000 species, 20 genera inTaiwan.
