    20. BLECHNACEAE Q򿹬
    CHARLES E. DEVOL
    Caudex erect, sometimes a small tree-like trunk, or rhizome creeping or scandent. Fronds monomorphic or .dimorphic, usually pinnate or pinnatifid, rarely bipinnate; stipes scaly at base, not articulate to rhizome; venation usually free, or with a costal row of areolae. Sori costal, discrete or in a coensori; usually with an indusium opening towards costa, rarely exindusiate.
    Nine or ten genera, four in Taiwan.

    1. Tree ferns with trunk like stem, about 1 m tall; fronds in terminal crown

    Rhizome creeping or erect and stout, occasionally scandent, dictyostelic; scales abundant, linear, narrow, dark brown to black, shining. Fronds monomorphic or dimorphic (dimorphic species often assigned to a separate genus: Struthiopteris Weiss. or Lomaria Willd.); pinnate or pinnatifid, venation of sterile fronds free. Sori linear, costal, coenosori, sporangia borne on a vein parallel to each side of costa; indusia firm, opening towards costa.
    Over 200 species, four in Taiwan.
