SHIEH, WANG-CHUENG, CHIOU, WEN-LIANG and DEVOL, CHARLES E.

Mostly small epiphytes growing on tree trunks with mosses and liverworts, or on rocks; rhizome short-creeping or suberect; scales usually opaque or sometimes clathrate with clear lumen. Stipes tufted or approximate, usually not articulate to rhizome; fronds simple, pinnate or rarely bipinnate; venation often hidden, usually free; patent hairs usually borne on stipe, rachis and one or both surfaces of lamina. Sori round, oval or linear, dorsal or marginal, superficial or immersed; sporangia often setose; spores tetrahedral. Prothallia filamentous, branched, not cordate.
A family of tropical ferns with about ten genera, six in Taiwan.

    KEY TO GENERA
    1. Fronds simple.
    2. Sori round or oval, superficial… 3. Grammitis
    2. Sori linear, immersed in 2 grooves, at apical end of frond… 5. Scleroglossum
    1. Fronds pinnate to bipinnate.
    3. Sori marginal, immersed in terminal or subterminal cavities… 4. Prosaptia
    3. Sori dorsal.
    4. Basiscopic margin of fertile pinnae folded back over the sorus… 1. Calymmodon
    4. Fertile pinnae flat.
    5. Each lobe or pinnae with only a single vein… 6. Xiphopteris
    5. Lobes or pinnae with costa and lateral veinlets… 2. Ctenopteris

    1. CALYMMODON Presl 荷包蕨屬

Very small epiphytes growing on moss covered tree trunks; rhizome suberect; scales pale brown, narrow, entire; roots densely covered with reddish-brown hairs. Stipes short, tufted; fronds narrowly linear, acuminate, pinnatifid or pinnate (with adnate pinnae), each lobe (or pinna) with a single vein; costa, maigins and both surfaces more or less hairy. Sori elliptic, borne on the upper pinnae, one sorus per pinna, the lower edge of the pinna is folded upward covering the sorus; paraphyses absent.
A genus of about 25 species, two in Taiwan.

    KEY TO SPECIES
    1. Hairs on fronds very short and sparse; lobes (or pinnae) narrow, nearly oblong, widely spaced… 1. C. cucullatus
    1. Hairs on fronds longer and plentiful; lobes widen above the base, usually close together… 2. C. gracilis
