Rhizome creeping or erect, dictyostelic. Stipes not articulate to rhizome, covered with scales at base; fronds strongly dimorphic; sterile fronds herbaceous, pinnate to bipinnatifid; venation free or anastomosing; fertile fronds pinnate to bipinnate, dark to nearly black. Sporangia covered by an inner indusium and by coriaceous reflexed leaf margin. Spores green.
Two genera, one in Taiwan.
1. MATTEUCCIA Todaro 莢果蕨屬
Large terrestrial ferns; rhizomes stout, erect or procumbent at base, dictyostelic; stipes clustered; scales on rhizome, stipe and rachis attached by base, thin, brown, lanceolate. Fronds dimorphic; sterile fronds bipinnatifid, texture herbaceous, the venation free, the undersurface of lamina sparsely covered with small narrow scales along costa and veins. Fertile fronds pinnate, much contracted, becoming purplish-brown, the margins coriaceous, inrolled, concealing the sori.
Three species, one in Taiwan.

Sterile fronds bipinnatifid; stipe 10-30 cm long, c. s. round, with 2 curved bundles; scales at base thin, brown, entire, lanceolate; lamina longer than wide; venation free, simple. Fertile fronds dark brown, persistent, pinnate; stipe 15-25 cm long; pinnae linear, usually 5-6 cm long. Sporangia in a coenosori, covered with thin, linear, inner indusium and coriaceous inrolled brown leaf margins.
Distributed in Korea, Japan, Taiwan, China and Himalayas.
